How FairFound works

This page explains what the homepage tabs show, how public counts are calculated, and how FairScore turns votes, discussion, and private maker feedback into rankings.

Feed tabs

Each tab answers a different question

The homepage is not one universal ranking. Each tab has its own selection and sort order.

Today

Shows live products whose launch date matches the current UTC day.

  • Ordered by FairScore descending, with publish time breaking ties.
  • This is the main daily leaderboard and the list that rolls over at UTC midnight.

Rising

Shows live products from the last 7 days that are gaining momentum.

  • Ordered by current FairScore minus the latest snapshot from at least 48 hours earlier.
  • This favors products that are still climbing, not just products that launched with a big first burst.

New

Shows the most recently published live products, regardless of score.

  • Ordered by publish time first, then creation time.
  • Use this when you want the newest listings, not the strongest-ranked ones.

What counts

Public numbers and ranking inputs are related, but not identical

Some numbers are simple public counters. Others are weighted inputs behind the scenes.

Public upvote count

The visible upvote total counts only votes whose status is active. Pending-review votes do not increase the public count until they are approved.

Weighted votes

FairScore uses the sum of active vote weights, not just the raw vote count. A product can have the same visible upvotes as another product and still rank differently if the trust weight behind those votes differs.

Comment count

The public comment count includes all comments on the product, including one-level replies. Comments also feed the engagement bonus, especially when more unique people join the discussion.

Structured feedback

Structured feedback requires a vote first. Each voter can keep one feedback entry per product, and the text stays private to the maker and admins. The count still contributes to score.

Why the button color can change while the number stays the same

That usually means the vote was recorded as pending review. The UI acknowledges your action immediately, but the public total and the score only move once the vote is active.

FairScore formula

FairScore rewards trusted votes first, then caps every other signal

The score is designed so one noisy behavior cannot completely dominate the feed.

FairScore = weightedVotes + engagementBonus + feedbackBonus - timePenalty

The final score never drops below zero. The homepage Today tab and the main browse views sort live products by this stored FairScore.

Weighted votes

sum(active vote trustWeight)

Public vote totals show the number of active votes. FairScore uses the weighted sum of those active votes instead.

Engagement bonus

unique commenters x 1.5 + comments x 0.3

Capped at 30% of weighted votes so discussion helps, but cannot overpower voting.

Feedback bonus

structured feedback count x 2.0

Capped at 20% of weighted votes so maker feedback matters without becoming the whole score.

Time penalty

log2(hours since launch - 48) x 2

Starts only after the first 48 hours, which helps newer launches compete before older products gradually cool off.

Trust and abuse controls

Votes are not all treated the same

FairFound tries to reward genuine participation and slow down the easiest forms of gaming.

Current trust-weight bonuses

  • Every active vote starts at 1.0 point.
  • Accounts older than 7 days add 0.3.
  • Accounts older than 30 days add 0.5.
  • Launching a product adds 0.5.
  • Writing at least 3 comments adds 0.3.
  • A verified email adds 0.2.
  • The final trust weight is capped at 2.5.

If an account was created within 24 hours of the product's launch, it falls back to the base vote weight instead of claiming all bonuses immediately.

Participation rules

  • Voting requires a verified email and an account age of at least 12 hours.
  • Commenting requires a verified email on a live product.
  • Makers can comment, but they cannot vote on their own launch.
  • Votes are limited to 60 per day per account.
  • Comments are limited to 5 every 10 minutes per account.
  • If a product receives more than 30 votes in 10 minutes, additional votes can be marked pending review.

Resets and timing

The feed resets daily, but the data itself keeps its history

UTC time is the platform clock for launch days and daily homepage turnover.

UTC midnight

The Today tab only includes products whose launch date matches the current UTC date. When UTC rolls over, the daily feed naturally becomes a new leaderboard for the new day.

Recomputing score

Votes, comments, and structured feedback all trigger score recomputation. FairFound also stores score snapshots over time so the Rising tab can compare momentum instead of only showing absolute score.
